NIA declares Saokat Molla 'fugitive', alerts BSF over attempt to flee Bangladesh

The National Investigation Agency has declared former Trinamool Congress MLA Saokat Molla absconding in connection with the Bhangar blast case and has shared his details with the Border Security Force. The move came after investigators were unable to locate Molla during raids conducted at multiple locations on Thursday. Officials are continuing efforts to trace him while monitoring any possibility of movement towards the international border.

According to investigators, Molla has been missing since NIA teams carried out searches at his residence, party office and other premises. While his son was detained and later arrested during the operation, Molla was not found at any of the locations searched. Investigators also noted that all three mobile phones allegedly used by him were switched off during the operation.

The case relates to an explosion in Bamunia in the Chaltaberia area of Bhangar ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections. One person was killed and several others were injured in the blast. The NIA recently intensified its investigation and had earlier arrested Trinamool leader Ahidul Islam in connection with the case. Thursday’s searches formed part of the agency’s continuing efforts to identify and question individuals linked to the incident.

Investigators suspect that Molla may have attempted to move towards areas close to the Bangladesh border and have circulated his details to the BSF and other agencies. According to information received by investigators, he may currently be hiding at a relative’s residence. Officials are examining multiple leads regarding his movements before and after the raids.

Local residents claimed that Molla was last seen travelling on a motorcycle towards Chunakhali in the Basanti area. Some accounts suggested that he was heading towards a ferry route and later changed direction after being recognised. Investigators subsequently received information that he might be hiding in a madrasa. NIA teams and central forces searched the madrasa, nearby locations and surrounding forested areas but were unable to locate him.
