Disruption in metro services between Dumdum and Dakshineswar; normal services resume after 2 hours
The two suspects believed to be involved in the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada have reportedly never left the country and are expected to be arrested in the coming weeks, as per a report by Canada's The Globe and Mail. The report suggests that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who have been monitoring the suspects for months, are close to making the arrests. Once charges are laid against the two men, the police will detail their alleged role in the assassination and any potential involvement of the Indian government.
The killing of Nijjar on June 18 outside a Gurdwara in Surrey strained India-Canada relations, with Canada PM Justin Trudeau accusing India of having a role in the assassination. This led to a diplomatic fallout, with India temporarily suspending visa operations in Canada and expelling 41 Canadian diplomats for alleged interference in India's internal affairs.
Amidst the tensions, the United States charged Indian national Nikhil Gupta with conspiracy to murder Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on U.S. soil. Canada's Prime Minister Trudeau expressed belief that the U.S. indictment may have prompted a shift in India-Canada relations.
India, however, remains prepared to cooperate in the investigation into Nijjar's murder. In response to the U.S. allegations, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated in a recent interview that India will examine any information regarding its alleged links to the foiled plot to murder the Sikh separatist leader. Modi emphasized India's commitment to the rule of law, pledging to investigate any actions, good or bad, by its citizens.
