Gour Banga University has not held a convocation ceremony for the past eight years. As a result, even after graduating from the university, students are unable to receive their degree certificates. This situation has created challenges for these students in pursuing higher education or securing employment.
Due to this issue, students from this university have to rely on provisional certificates, which are valid for only six months. Consequently, graduates from Gour Banga University have to repeatedly visit the university. They complain that calling the Vice-Chancellor or Registrar multiple times does not yield any results.
The university's Registrar, Biswajit Das, has acknowledged this problem. He stated that the issue stems from the lack of approval from Raj Bhavan (Governor’s office). According to him, the Governor wants to retain control over the universities, which is why the convocation ceremony has not been approved.
Additionally, large-scale corruption amounting to crores of rupees has taken place in the name of the convocation ceremony at the university. Due to this, the state government has halted the event for the past eight years.
