No gaps in defence preparedness, India ready for all scenarios, govt tells Parliament panel

India’s defence preparedness is robust and equipped to handle any situation, the government informed a Parliamentary panel during a meeting that also touched upon the country’s Indian Ocean Strategy and the safety of Indians abroad amid global conflicts. Lawmakers were assured that provisions for arms and equipment are sufficient, with no critical gaps in readiness.

The meeting of the Standing Committee on External Affairs, chaired by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, included senior officials from the defence and external affairs ministries. While Operation Sindoor was not officially discussed, members did raise concerns about defence budget allocations and the potential threat from Pakistan. Officials responded that India's forces are fully equipped and prepared across land, sea, and air domains.

The discussion extended to India’s growing focus on the Indian Ocean, where challenges like piracy, maritime traffic threats, and China's increasing presence were addressed. Tharoor said the concept of a Blue Water Navy and regional stability were part of the “outstanding” deliberations.

Lawmakers also raised concerns about Indians stranded in conflict zones like Iran and Iraq. AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi requested urgent help for 133 Hyderabad residents stuck due to airspace restrictions, urging the Indian embassy in Kuwait to assist with e-visas. The panel was reassured of India’s ongoing commitment to supporting its citizens and maintaining a free, open Indian Ocean region.
