The West Bengal Police have expressed serious concerns about the upcoming Nabanna Abhiyan, scheduled for August 27th, under the banner of the Chhatra Samaj. During a press conference on Monday, ADG South Bengal Supratim Sarkar cast doubts on the legitimacy of the organization and questioned the motives behind the planned protest.
During a press conference, Sarkar said that there will be complete normalcy at Nabanna as usual. Talking about the protest, Sarkar said, "There is no permission. If the campaign is carried out then adequate police force is ready for it". Sarkar also added that if they (protestors) want to conduct the campaign peacefully and on some other day in a protected place, then we will give permission.
ADG Sarkar further revealed that the West Bengal Student Society, which has called for the Nabanna Abhiyan, is a previously unknown entity. "We have not heard about the existence of any organization named West Bengal Student Society before," he said, raising suspicions about the authenticity of the group. The police also presented evidence showing that the organization's social media page follows accounts associated with political entities, including 'ABVP Kolkata' and 'Shankar Ghosh.'
The timing of the protest has also raised eyebrows. The Nabanna Abhiyan is set to take place on a day when thousands of students will be appearing for the All India UGC NET examination, scheduled from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and 3 pm to 6 pm. ADG Sarkar questioned the rationale behind organizing a student movement on an examination day, a pattern not seen in the past. This has led the police to suspect ulterior motives behind the agitation.
Adding to the intrigue, ADG Sarkar mentioned that one of the organizers reportedly had a meeting with a political leader in a five-star hotel in Kolkata. However, the identity and details of this meeting remain unclear.
