No winter relief for Kolkata as clouds block sun, temperatures set to fall again | Watch

Kolkata has been experiencing an unusual chill despite a gradual rise in temperatures over the past few days, with northerly winds and persistent cloud cover intensifying the cold across the city. On Sunday, the minimum temperature was recorded at 14.9 degrees Celsius, around 0.7 degrees above normal, yet residents continued to feel sharper winter conditions as the day progressed.

According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, the absence of sunshine has played a crucial role in worsening the cold. Thick cloud cover has remained over Kolkata and its adjoining areas since morning, preventing solar warmth from reaching the surface. As a result, fog continued to linger in several parts of the city even by midday.

Meteorologists noted that conditions would have been significantly different had the sun emerged. The weather department’s morning bulletin initially placed the minimum temperature at 15.2 degrees Celsius, but later revised it to 14.9 degrees, indicating a further drop after early measurements.

Earlier forecasts had suggested a temporary rise in temperatures across south Bengal, followed by another decline. From Sunday onward, temperatures have begun to fall again, with a drop of two to three degrees Celsius expected over the next three days. For now, the region is likely to experience temperatures two to four degrees below normal for at least the next five days, with no major change anticipated in the short term.
