An intense heatwave has gripped parts of the northeast, with Itanagar and Dibrugarh recording their highest-ever temperatures for June. On Thursday, Itanagar reached 39.7°C, breaking its earlier record of 39.5°C from June 2015. Dibrugarh also saw its hottest June day at 38.7°C, surpassing the 38.2°C mark recorded a decade ago.
Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh matched its earlier record of 38.6°C, while several other towns in Assam such as Jorhat, Mazbat, and North Lakhimpur also crossed 38°C. The temperature anomalies ranged from 5.6°C to 7.6°C above normal, making the heatwave one of the most severe in recent memory.
As a result, district authorities have revised school timings after multiple cases of students collapsing due to heat stress. Assam’s Labour Welfare Department also altered tea garden working hours, advancing the shift by two hours to reduce exposure during peak heat.
Meteorologists have indicated that some relief may arrive soon, with a second spell of monsoon showers expected in the coming 2–3 days.
