Panic has spread across parts of Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut after repeated incidents of women being targeted by what locals are calling a “nude gang.” Four such cases have now been reported from the Daurala area, prompting police to step up surveillance with drones and CCTV cameras.
In the latest incident, a woman travelling alone to work in Bharaala village was allegedly dragged towards the fields by two men without clothes. She managed to escape after raising an alarm, following which villagers rushed to the spot but found no one. Fearing for her safety, the woman has since changed her job and route, her family said.
Local villagers claim this is the fourth such attack, though earlier incidents went unreported due to fear of public shame. Village chief Rajendra Kumar said, “Initially people did not take it seriously, but now there is an atmosphere of fear. This gang has so far targeted only women.”
Police have carried out extensive searches, including a drone-assisted operation last Saturday in the presence of senior officers. “We combed the area with drones and the help of villagers, but did not find any suspects. Women cops have been deployed, and the search is ongoing,” Senior Superintendent of Police Vipin Tada said. While some families remain confined to their homes in fear, others suspect the incidents may be mischief aimed at tarnishing the administration’s image.
