Gariahat Police are investigating the death of a 32-year-old man, Subrat Kumar Sahoo, who was found deceased at a residence on Ballygunge's Mahanirban Road in Kolkata early Tuesday morning. The incident, reported around 3:30 AM, has led authorities to open a UD (Unnatural Death) case as initial findings point towards an apparent suicide. The discovery was made after police were alerted to the scene, highlighting a somber beginning to the day in the otherwise bustling locality.
Gariahat Police Station received the information from Gautam Debnath, who reported that a male person was found hanging at 36K, Mahanirban Road, Kolkata 700029. Police officials immediately responded to the address. Upon arrival at the second floor of 36K, Mahanirban Road, officers found the main door of the flat bolted from the inside. To access the premises and ascertain the situation, the police team had to forcibly break open the door.
Inside the flat, Subrat Kumar Sahoo, son of Jaya Krishna Sahoo and a resident of Balarampur, Ghasipura district, Keonjhar, was discovered hanging from the ceiling with the aid of a "gamcha". He was immediately brought down by police personnel with the help of his colleagues, who were also present. However, upon examination, no signs of life could be detected, and a semen discharge was reportedly noted. Further inquiry revealed that Sahoo had reportedly been experiencing severe depression for the past two days.
A suicide note, written in the Odia language, was also recovered from the scene. Sahoo's family members and his senior officers were promptly informed of the tragic incident. An inquest was conducted at the scene given the clear absence of life. Following this, Subrat Kumar Sahoo's body was transported to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNNM Hospital) for post-mortem examination, which will officially determine the exact cause of death. No formal complaint regarding the death has been received by the police as of now.
