Samik Bhattacharya wins unopposed, becomes new chief of Bengal BJP
Tension flared in Budge Budge on Tuesday night as contract workers associated with Indian Oil’s loading and unloading operations staged a protest over alleged non-payment of wages for nearly three years. The protest escalated after gas was released from multiple LPG cylinders on the road and several motorcycles were vandalised. A heavy police presence was deployed in the area to prevent further escalation.
According to the protesting drivers and helpers, the dues have remained unpaid despite repeated appeals. They alleged that the contractor's representatives have withheld their wages. A meeting was scheduled on Tuesday to discuss the matter, during which workers claimed they were physically assaulted by individuals linked to the contractor. In response, the workers blocked the road and began the protest.
The protesters reportedly opened gas valves from cylinders and leaked gas in the open. Several two-wheelers were also damaged during the demonstration. Police forces reached the spot and began efforts to disperse the crowd and secure the area. No injuries or arrests were officially reported till the time of filing this report.
