No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A major accident was narrowly averted on Friday after a large portion of a dilapidated 120-year-old residential building collapsed in the Kelabangan area of Ward No. 39 under Jorasanko in Kolkata. Around 15 to 17 families were reportedly inside the historic but severely damaged structure at the time of the incident, raising fears of a potential tragedy.
According to local residents, sections of the roof and walls suddenly gave way, triggering panic among those living inside the building. Families rushed out in fear as debris fell from the structure. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, preventing what could have turned into a major loss of life and property in the densely populated neighbourhood.
Following the incident, local ward councillor Jasimuddin visited the site and expressed serious concern over the condition of the building. He said the structure is more than a century old and has become extremely unsafe for habitation. The councillor also alleged that multiple written complaints had previously been submitted to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation warning about the building’s deteriorating condition, but no effective action had been taken.
After the collapse, families living in the building now face an uncertain future as the remaining structure is reportedly at risk of further collapse. Residents say they have no alternative accommodation and are forced to remain in the unsafe premises. The councillor has urged authorities to take immediate steps for rehabilitation and ensure that preventive action is taken before a major tragedy occurs.
