Another KMC councillor, Biswajit Mondal arrested, after woman alleges molestation and threats
A fatal bus accident took place at around 12:30 PM today, when a private bus operating on the Howrah-Jhikira route reportedly lost control while traveling at high speed in Jhikira Bazar in Howrah’s Joypur. The vehicle struck 70-year-old local resident Kartik Dolui, who died on the spot before any medical help could be summoned. The accident instantly triggered a wave of anger among the bystanders and local shopkeepers.
Witnesses alleged that the bus was being driven recklessly, a recurring complaint on this particular route. Within minutes of the accident, an angry mob gathered at the spot and began vandalizing the killer bus, smashing its windshields and damaging the bodywork. The driver and the conductor managed to flee the scene fearing public wrath. The protesters blocked the road, demanding immediate administrative intervention to curb the "menace of speeding buses" that has claimed several lives in the area recently.
Upon receiving the news, a large contingent from the Joypur Police Station rushed to the spot to bring the situation under order. The police had a tough time pacifying the agitated crowd, who refused to move the body until a senior official assured them of strict action against the driver and the bus owner. After nearly an hour of standoff, the police managed to recover the body of Kartik Dolui and sent it for a post-mortem examination.
