A pilgrim from Assam died after taking a holy dip at Gangasagar on Tuesday, triggering swift response from local volunteers and the administration. The deceased has been identified as Mitu Mandal (51), a resident of Sonitpur district, who had arrived alone to perform the ritual bath.
According to reports, Mandal suddenly lost consciousness near Bathing Ghat No. 3 on Tuesday afternoon. He was immediately taken by volunteers and members of the HAM Radio team to a temporary hospital at Sagar, where doctors on duty declared him dead.
Following the incident, efforts were launched to trace his family. HAM Radio volunteers, aided by an amulet found on the body, suspected he was from Assam and coordinated with operators there. The Sundarbans police later contacted the family, which is expected to reach Gangasagar on Wednesday.
