Only Rohit and Gambhir knew about Ravichandran Ashwin's retirement

Ravichandran Ashwin’s sudden announcement of retirement from international cricket on December 18 left most of the Indian cricket team and management in shock. Only captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir reportedly knew about the legendary spinner’s decision beforehand.

In a press conference with Rohit by his side, Ashwin declared his intent to retire, surprising players like Virat Kohli and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Kohli took to social media to express his emotions, revealing that he learned of Ashwin's decision during a rain break on Day 5 of the Brisbane Test. “I’ve played with you for 14 years, and when you told me today you’re retiring, it made me emotional,” Kohli said. He also shared a heartfelt embrace with Ashwin in the dressing room.

The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, was equally unaware of the decision. “There was no nudge from the selection committee. Ashwin is a legend and has the right to take his own call,” a senior BCCI official said on condition of anonymity.

For Rohit Sharma, Ashwin’s decision wasn’t entirely unexpected. “I first heard about it when I landed in Perth during the first Test. Ash was very sure about his decision, and it was something on his mind for a while,” Rohit shared during the post-match press conference.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir, who was also informed earlier, reportedly supported Ashwin’s personal choice. “It’s a decision that deserves respect; he has given so much to Indian cricket,” said a source close to the team management.

Ashwin, India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, leaves behind a legacy of 537 Test wickets and numerous records. His retirement marks the end of a remarkable 14-year career, celebrated by fans and peers alike.
