Lawmakers from several opposition parties wrote a letter to President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday, complaining about the "malicious trolling" of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and demanding immediate action against the trolls and the forces behind them.
“We are all aware that the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court headed by Hon'ble Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud seized and heard an important constitutional issue on government formation and the role of the Governor in Maharashtra. While subjugation is in question, the troll army, probably sympathetic to the interest of the ruling party in Maharashtra, has launched an offensive against the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India. The words and content are filthy and deplorable, which has garnered thousands of views on social media platforms,” the MPs said in a letter to President Murmu.
“In a matter sub judice before the Supreme Court, such despicable conduct is possible when such people enjoy the support of the ruling dispensation. Your Excellency and the constitutional and statutory authorities in India are bound to protect the dignity and decency of the Indian Judiciary. As Judge J.S. Verma in his famous statement in Vineet Narain clearly stated, "You are so high, the law is always above you," the letter added.
MPs say it is “also a brazen case of obstruction of justice”, saying: “We expect immediate action not only against those indulging in trolling, but also against the people behind it, supporting and sponsoring it. As law abiding MPs, we expect immediate action against the culprits, otherwise the matter may have to be escalated to a higher level.
