At least 107 individuals have been hospitalized in Madurai following a suspected food poisoning incident at a temple festival in Kalvimadai village, located in Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar district, on Sunday. Attendees began to develop symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea shortly after consuming a meal served during the festival. While some initially received treatment at local medical facilities, a significant number were subsequently referred to the Madurai Government Rajaji Medical College Hospital (GRH) as their symptoms worsened.
Among those admitted to the hospital, 55 are women and 11 are children, according to health officials. Doctors at GRH suspect food poisoning as the cause, with contaminated drinking water being a possible contributing factor. Medical authorities have, however, assured that the condition of the patients is stable and there is no life-threatening danger. All affected individuals have now been moved to regular wards and are expected to recover within two to three days. Health authorities have launched an investigation to identify the exact source of contamination and to prevent any future outbreaks.
