Over 100 local and express trains canceled for 100 hours for Sealdah division bridge repairs

Indian Railways has announced a 100-hour shutdown in the Sealdah division for bridge repair work, resulting in the cancellation of over 100 trains, including local and express services. The shutdown will take place from 12:00 AM on January 23 to 4:00 AM on January 27, impacting key routes, particularly between Sealdah and Dankuni. The reason for the shutdown is the replacement of an old steel girder of a railway overbridge situated between Balighat and Balihalt. This bridge, originally constructed in 1931, has become structurally unsafe due to prolonged use and requires urgent replacement to prevent potential safety hazards and improve the efficiency of the rail network.

The steel girder of the overbridge has deteriorated over time, leading to the need for immediate replacement. Indian Railways emphasized that this repair work is crucial for enhancing the safety and operational capacity of the line, which serves both passenger and freight traffic. Once the repair is completed, the line's operational speed is expected to improve. The bridge replacement will allow for more reliable train services in the future.

During the shutdown period, the Sealdah-Dankuni section will experience major disruptions. More than 20 pairs of EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) local trains will be canceled each day from January 23 to January 26. These cancellations will affect commuters traveling between Sealdah and Dankuni, with over 100 local trains being impacted in total. Passengers are advised to plan alternative routes and check for updates from Indian Railways regarding train operations.

In addition to the local train cancellations, several express trains will also be affected. A total of 6 pairs of high-demand express services, including Kolkata-Patna Garib Rath, Tevagha Express, Sealdah-Siuri Express, Dibrugarh-Kolkata Express, Sealdah-Jangipur Road Express, and Sealdah-Asansol Intercity Express, will be canceled during this period. Passengers who had already booked tickets for these trains will automatically receive refunds. The cancellations are expected to disrupt travel plans for a large number of passengers who rely on these express services.

Certain trains will still operate but with modified routes and station stops. The Sealdah-Puri Duronto Express will depart from Howrah instead of Sealdah, and similarly, it will terminate at Howrah instead of Sealdah when returning. Additionally, 16 pairs of express trains will be rerouted via Dumdum-Naihati, which includes trains like Jammu-Tawi Express, Bikaner Duronto Express, and Sealdah Rajdhani Express. Other trains will have modified stops, such as some trains halting at Belgharia instead of Dakshineswar. Passengers are strongly encouraged to check updated schedules and station information before their journeys to ensure a smooth travel experience.
