Kasba Gangrape: Court sends all 3 accused to 7-day police custody
Sanitation services in Chinsurah Municipality of Hooghly district came to a halt on Tuesday as around 2,000 temporary sanitation workers and laborers began an indefinite strike. The workers are demanding a ₹100 daily wage increase, one-time retirement compensation of ₹5 lakh for employees aged above 65 years who are to be removed from service, and implementation of Employee State Insurance (ESI) and Provident Fund (PF) benefits.
On Monday night, while a meeting was underway between municipal officials, councillors, and the chairman, temporary workers surrounded the municipal office. Police were deployed after the situation escalated, and officials were escorted out. The workers lifted the gherao after receiving an assurance from the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) that discussions would be held regarding their demands.
Despite the assurance, all temporary workers refrained from reporting to duty on Monday. As of now, no formal resolution has been reached, and civic sanitation operations remain completely suspended across Chinsurah Municipality.
