The recent unrest in Murshidabad, which led to widespread violence and destruction of properties, has left hundreds of families displaced. With many fleeing their homes to take shelter in camps in Malda, the authorities have now compiled a list of families whose houses were destroyed in the riots. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier promised support under the Banglar Bari, stating that new homes would be built for those whose houses were damaged.
According to sources from the state administration, over 300 homes in the affected areas were either vandalized or completely destroyed. The violence, which erupted after the passage of the Waqf Act, spread quickly through regions like Dhulian and Shamserganj. Villages such as Betbona and Jafrabad witnessed houses being set on fire one after another, leaving many families without shelter.
In line with Mamata Banerjee’s promise, an official list has been prepared and sent to the Panchayat office for verification. Following the inspection of the affected areas, the list was forwarded to the Finance Department for approval, which will enable the allocation of funds for the reconstruction of homes.
As part of the Banglar Bari scheme, the first installment of Rs 60,000 will be distributed to the families whose homes were destroyed. This will help them rebuild their homes and start the process of recovery. According to administrative sources, this payment will be made shortly.
It has been confirmed that over 12 lakh beneficiaries outside Murshidabad have already received their first installment under the scheme. The second installment is expected to be disbursed by May, with the focus now on ensuring that the families affected by the unrest in Murshidabad receive timely assistance.
