More than 300 residents of the E-Block of a residential complex in New Town, Kolkata, have allegedly fallen ill over the past three weeks, with contaminated water suspected to be the cause. According to residents, several people are suffering from diarrhea, stomach pain, vomiting, and high fever. Some of the affected individuals are reported to be in serious condition and have been admitted to hospitals. The complex houses a total of 522 residents.
Residents have alleged that the water supply became contaminated due to negligence in maintaining the overhead tank. They claim that despite repeated complaints to the management, no concrete corrective measures were taken. In almost every flat, at least one member is said to be unwell, raising concerns of a widespread health crisis within the housing complex.
One resident stated that his two daughters are currently hospitalised, with doctors reportedly identifying contaminated water as the source of infection. He further alleged that foul-smelling yellow water flows from the taps when opened. Following mounting anger and anxiety, residents have lodged a formal complaint at the Techno City Police Station, seeking immediate intervention.
