Over 85 lakh people took a dip at Gangasagar on Makar Sankranti

On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, 8.5 million devotees gathered at Ganga Sagar for the annual holy dip, considered highly auspicious in Hindu tradition. The timing for the ritual began at 6:58 AM on Tuesday and extends until Wednesday morning. Pilgrims from across the country reached the site early, performing the holy dip, donating cows, and offering prayers at the Kapil Muni temple. Devotees also engaged in creating Shivlingas from sand and participating in other traditional practices.

The South 24 Parganas administration reported that a total of 4.2 million pilgrims had visited Ganga Sagar from January 1 to January 12. With the Makar Sankranti turnout today, the total attendance surged to 8.5 million. Security and crowd management involved the deployment of 13,000 police personnel, installation of numerous CCTV cameras, and monitoring through a centralized mega control room covering the area from Kolkata’s Outram Ghat to the Ganga Sagar Mela.

Three deaths were reported during the event due to heart attacks, with one on Sunday and two on Monday. Emergency response teams, including medical units, disaster response personnel, and Navy officials, were stationed at multiple points to address health and safety concerns. To manage the influx and maintain smooth operations, special arrangements such as dedicated medical camps and disaster response measures were implemented.

The Ganga Sagar Mela witnesses pilgrims from all over India, creating a convergence of diverse cultures and traditions. Despite the simultaneous Mahakumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh, the event saw a massive turnout. The site remained vibrant with chants of “Har Har Gange,” as devotees performed the sacred rituals, making it one of the largest religious gatherings in the country this year.
