Bomb scare in Howrah after suspicious bag found on GT Road, turns out to be mangoes
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that Pakistan will remain grateful to U.S. President Donald Trump for what he described as a timely intervention that helped secure a ceasefire between India and Pakistan following last year’s military conflict. Sharif made the remarks while addressing a reception hosted by the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Referring to the four-day military confrontation that followed the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people, Sharif claimed that Trump’s intervention played a decisive role in ending hostilities on May 10 last year. He stated that the U.S. president’s actions helped restore peace in South Asia and said Trump would be remembered as a man of peace.
The conflict began after India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting what it described as terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the Pahalgam attack. Trump has repeatedly claimed that he helped broker peace between the two countries after the confrontation. India has consistently maintained that the understanding was reached directly between New Delhi and Islamabad and has rejected assertions of third-party mediation.
During his speech, Sharif also praised Trump’s leadership style, describing it as energetic and focused on advancing American interests. He said the U.S. president had brought renewed momentum to Washington’s international engagement and credited him with pursuing peace, progress and prosperity through his administration’s policies.
Sharif further highlighted the long-standing relationship between Pakistan and the United States, noting that the U.S. was among the first countries to recognise Pakistan after its creation in 1947. He said bilateral cooperation extends across sectors including security, counter-terrorism, trade, investment, agriculture, science, education, health and energy.
Addressing regional diplomacy, Sharif claimed that Pakistan was playing a role in facilitating contacts between the United States and Iran. He thanked Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir for his contribution to ongoing peace efforts. At the same event, U.S. Charge d’Affaires Natalie Baker described the two countries as strategic partners and said the relationship was based on mutual respect, aligned interests and a shared vision for security and prosperity.
