Panic at Calcutta Medical College as 19-year-old psychiatric patient goes on rampage inside medicine room

Panic spread at the Calcutta Medical College Hospital on Saturday afternoon after a mentally ill youth allegedly went on a sudden rampage inside the medicine department of the outdoor section. The 19-year-old, a resident of Shantipur in Nadia, had come to the hospital with his grandmother for psychiatric treatment. After consulting doctors, he went to Gate No. 3 of the Lagoa Outdoor section to collect medicines and later entered room number 208 on the second floor of the department.

According to hospital sources, the youth suddenly locked the door from inside and began vandalising the room. Cupboards, chairs and tables were overturned, while mirrors and other objects were smashed with sharp items. The sudden outburst created panic among hospital staff, patients and their families present in the outdoor area. Doctors and employees attempted to calm him down and prevent the situation from escalating further.

As the situation intensified, staff members broke the glass of the door in an attempt to communicate with him, but the youth could not be restrained. Police were eventually informed, and after prolonged efforts he was brought under control. Security personnel also faced attempts of attack as he allegedly threw objects while resisting rescue attempts. Finally, he was removed from the room and given medication to stabilise his condition.

Medical Superintendent and Deputy Director Dr. Anjan Adhikari said, “The boy is mentally ill and suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder. The incident occurred because he did not take his medicine on time.” After being calmed down, the youth was admitted to the psychiatric department and later handed over to his family. Broken glass from the incident remained scattered outside room number 208, raising concerns among hospital staff as the outdoor department is expected to reopen to heavy patient crowds from Monday morning.
