Panic spread in Kot village under the Mallarpur police station area of Birbhum district after a large cache of fresh crude bombs was recovered on Friday morning. Local residents spotted several explosives stacked beside a bamboo grove near Chander Math pond and informed the police. Officers later recovered the bombs and called in a bomb squad to defuse them safely.
Police sources said around 31 fresh bombs were recovered from the area. The entire stretch near the bamboo grove was cordoned off after villagers alerted authorities about explosives lying in the open field. The bomb squad later neutralized the recovered bombs at the site.
According to sources, police had conducted raids in several houses in the village on Thursday night following specific inputs. The raids were reportedly carried out at houses belonging to Abdul Sheikh, Barik Sheikh, Nasir Khan, Faizul Sheikh and Khokon Sheikh. Investigators suspect there could be a connection between the overnight raids and the recovery of the explosives on Friday morning.
Some local residents alleged that the bombs may have been stored inside one of the houses and later dumped beside the bamboo grove after news of police action spread in the area. The recovery of such a large number of crude bombs after the elections has triggered concern among villagers. Police have started an investigation to identify who stockpiled the explosives and for what purpose they were intended.
