Panihati Municipality’s Ward No. 23 Trinamool Congress councilor, Samrat Chakraborty, has lodged a police complaint after receiving death threats ahead of the new chairman’s oath-taking ceremony. The threats were issued through two phone calls from an unknown number starting with +19 on Saturday evening. The caller warned him to follow certain “instructions” before the upcoming assembly elections or face dire consequences. Chakraborty registered the complaint at Ghola police station on Sunday, prompting an immediate police investigation.
The same caller allegedly issued similar death threats to Panihati MLA Nirmal Ghosh and his son, councilor Tirthankar Ghosh. Security concerns have intensified, with authorities reviewing call records and tracing the number’s origin. “The threats are being taken seriously, and investigations are underway to identify the caller,” a police official confirmed. The police are also coordinating with cybercrime experts to track any potential leads.
This incident follows the resignation of the previous municipal chairman after directives from the Chief Minister, leading to a political reshuffle. After discussions, a new chairman was selected and is set to take the oath on Monday. The threats have come at a time when security arrangements for the event were already being planned. Officials are now considering additional measures to ensure safety.
Law enforcement agencies have increased surveillance around key political figures in the municipality. Police teams are questioning potential witnesses and verifying any previous reports of threats in the area. Officers have urged all councilors to remain alert and report any suspicious activity. Security at the swearing-in venue has also been strengthened as a precautionary measure.
