Court sends Councilor Mahesh Sharma to 6-day police custody in extortion case
Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan, widely known as Pappu Yadav, was granted bail by a Patna MP-MLA court on Tuesday in a decades-old case, but continues to remain in Beur Central Jail after police secured his remand in two fresh cases.
Yadav’s bail came in the 31-year-old case in which he was arrested late last week after his earlier bail was cancelled. He had been lodged in Beur jail since Friday following his arrest in connection with the long-pending case relating to alleged fraud and rental dispute dating back to 1995. However, immediately after the bail order was pronounced, the Patna Police took him on remand in two new FIRs — the Production case and the Buddha Colony case — preventing his release from custody. The court granted the police remand, meaning Yadav will continue to stay in Beur jail pending further legal action.
Supporters of the MP have vocally criticised the legal developments, arguing that Yadav has been targeted after raising contentious issues. Meanwhile, law enforcement officials maintain that the remand in the new cases is necessary for further investigation as the judicial process continues.
