Partha Chatterjee secures Bail in all job scam cases, jail release soon?

In a dramatic turn that has gripped West Bengal's political corridors, former Education Minister Partha Chatterjee has finally broken through the legal barriers holding him captive for over three years. Today, the Calcutta High Court, under Justice Suvra Ghosh, granted him conditional bail in the last remaining case tied to the explosive school recruitment scam—the primary teachers' hiring irregularities. This ruling comes after a tense wait since the hearing concluded on September 15, with the judge reserving her order amid fierce arguments from both sides. Chatterjee, the once-powerful Trinamool Congress leader arrested in July 2022 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), now stands on the brink of freedom, having navigated a labyrinth of cases involving massive cash hauls, seized assets, and allegations of being the "mastermind" behind one of India's largest education corruption scandals.

With bails already secured in ED's money laundering probe, CBI's secondary and higher secondary recruitment cases, and even Group C and D staff hirings, this latest verdict could see the 75-year-old walk out of Alipore Jail just in time for Durga Puja festivities. The saga began with a shocking raid in 2022, when ED sleuths stormed Chatterjee's and his close aide Arpita Mukherjee's residences, unearthing nearly Rs 50 crore in cash stuffed into suitcases, alongside gold, jewelry, and properties worth another Rs 10 crore—totaling a staggering Rs 60 crore in seized assets. This cash-for-jobs racket allegedly manipulated teacher selections across primary, secondary, and higher levels in state-run schools, sidelining merit for bribes and favoritism. Chatterjee, who lost his ministerial post but retained his MLA status, was dubbed the "key orchestrator" by investigators, with CBI arguing his release could tamper with probes due to his lingering influence in political circles.

Yet, his legal team hammered home points on prolonged incarceration, health woes—including age-related ailments—and the fact that co-accused like Mukherjee and even his son-in-law Kalyanmay Bhattacharya (turned approver) have long been free on bail.Justice Ghosh's bench weighed these contentions carefully, imposing strict conditions: Chatterjee must furnish a personal bond, avoid influencing witnesses, and report regularly to authorities. This isn't his first brush with relief; earlier this month, a special CBI court in Alipore approved his bail in the ninth-tenth and eleventh-twelfth grade recruitment cases with a modest Rs 7,000 bond.

The Supreme Court had paved the way in December 2024 by granting conditional bail in the ED case, effective from February 1, 2025, after expediting witness examinations to prevent a "failed trial." But it was the primary case—where CBI filed chargesheets on December 27 implicating Chatterjee alongside figures like Ayan Shil and Santu Ganguly—that kept him locked up, with the agency insisting he was the "main brain" pulling strings even post-arrest.Chatterjee's lawyers didn't hold back in court, repeatedly questioning why their client remained jailed while over a dozen others, including peripheral players, had walked free. CBI countered with evidence of Chatterjee's "unwavering clout," citing his role in Trinamool's inner sanctum and potential to derail ongoing trials. The chargesheet in the primary case painted a grim picture: rigged OMR sheets, ghost candidates, and a web of intermediaries funneling crores.

As the dust settles, eyes are on whether Chatterjee will indeed step out soon—his counsel confidently predicts release upon formalities. This development ripples beyond the courtroom, fueling debates on accountability in Bengal's education sector, where thousands of qualified teachers lost rightful spots to the corrupt. For Trinamool, it's a bittersweet boost ahead of Puja; for opposition parties like BJP, it's ammunition to cry "soft on scamsters." Chatterjee's partial rehabilitation—he can stay an MLA but not hold office—signals judicial caution, balancing undertrial rights against public outrage over the Rs 60 crore loot that symbolized deeper rot.Yet, freedom isn't absolute. With trials looming and assets still attached, Chatterjee's post-jail life hangs in limbo. Will he reclaim political relevance, or fade into quiet retirement? As Kolkata buzzes with speculation, for now, the man who once shaped Bengal's classrooms may soon shape his own destiny outside iron bars.
