Passenger bus stuck in flash flood in North Bengal, locals help in quick rescue

A major disaster was narrowly averted in the Madarihat area of Alipurduar, North Bengal, amidst continuous heavy rainfall. A passenger bus became suddenly stranded in a flash flood, causing widespread panic among its occupants. However, thanks to the quick thinking and courageous efforts of local residents, all passengers were safely evacuated, averting a potentially tragic incident in the region grappling with severe monsoon conditions.

According to available information, the passenger bus was en route from Jamtala to Totopara. On Wednesday morning, as the bus was passing through the Madarihat area, the water level in the Bangri River suddenly and rapidly increased. This unexpected surge caught the bus by surprise, leading to its immobilization in the swelling waters, leaving passengers in a precarious situation.

It is believed that the sudden flood in the river was caused by heavy rainfall in the Bhutanese hills, leading to an abrupt and significant rise in water levels that inundated the entire surrounding area. This phenomenon often occurs in the region during intense monsoon periods, as water from the hills rushes down, overwhelming local rivers and low-lying areas.

With the bus trapped in the floodwaters, a portion of it began to submerge, causing immense distress among the passengers who started crying out for help. The bus driver, displaying remarkable presence of mind, managed to prevent the bus from being swept away by the strong current, but the situation was rapidly deteriorating, posing a serious threat to those onboard.

Upon receiving information about the incident, local residents swiftly arrived at the scene and immediately launched into rescue operations without delay. They also promptly informed the police and local administration about the unfolding crisis. Braving the overflowing river, the locals waded into the water, reached the bus, and painstakingly evacuated every passenger and the driver to safety, moving them to a secure location. While all individuals were rescued, the bus remains stuck in the river, highlighting the force of the floodwaters.

Following this incident, the road connectivity between Madarihat and Totopara has been completely cut off, severely disrupting transportation in the area. The administration has stated that it is closely monitoring the situation. Efforts to restore connectivity will commence as soon as the water level and flow in the river recede to a safe level, allowing for repair and accessibility.
