A shocking case of alleged mistreatment under the Swasthya Sathi health scheme has surfaced in North Howrah, drawing strong reactions from local political leadership. A patient admitted to a hospital using the Swasthya Sathi card was allegedly denied surgery and subjected to threats by hospital staff.
According to reports, the hospital staff questioned the patient on the hospital bed, allegedly asking why he chose to be admitted using the government health card. Staff members reportedly told the patient that providing treatment under the Swasthya Sathi scheme is costly and inconvenient for the hospital.
For three days, the patient was left untreated, despite requiring surgery. Family members alleged that the hospital administration deliberately delayed medical attention due to the financial model associated with the health card. The situation escalated when word reached North Howrah MLA Gautam Choudhary.
Immediately after receiving the information, MLA Gautam Choudhary rushed to the hospital and strongly reprimanded the staff for their alleged behavior. He expressed outrage at the mistreatment of patients admitted under government welfare schemes and emphasized that such practices are unacceptable.
Gautam Choudhary announced that he would be lodging a formal complaint with the state health department against the hospital. He further asserted that strict action must be taken to ensure hospitals do not discriminate against patients based on their mode of admission.
The incident has sparked widespread debate over the implementation of health schemes like Swasthya Sathi and the need for strict monitoring of private hospitals benefiting from government partnerships.
