Peon serves urine instead of drinking water to senior in Odisha, arrested

A peon working at the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RWSS) Department in Odisha’s Gajapati district was arrested after allegedly giving a bottle of urine to his senior officer instead of drinking water. The incident took place on the night of July 23 at the RWSS office in R Udayagiri, where both employees were on duty.

According to the complaint, Assistant Executive Engineer Sachin Gouda had asked peon Siba Narayan Nayak for a bottle of drinking water. Nayak allegedly handed him a bottle containing urine. Gouda, unaware of its contents, drank from the bottle while working. He reportedly began to feel unwell shortly afterward and became suspicious of the liquid.

Gouda’s condition worsened, and he was admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for medical treatment. He later submitted a sample of the liquid for laboratory testing. The test results showed an unusually high concentration of ammonia in the liquid, confirming that the substance was not suitable for consumption.

After his recovery, Gouda lodged a police complaint. He stated that two other staff members who had also consumed the water had raised concerns about its taste and quality. Based on the complaint and the test results, the police detained Nayak for questioning and subsequently arrested him.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of law, and an investigation is currently underway. Authorities are trying to determine the motive behind the act and whether others were involved. No official statement regarding disciplinary action or suspension has been issued yet.
