Per-cylinder LPG subsidy hiked for recipients of the PM Ujjwala Yojana from ₹200 to ₹300

The government has raised the subsidy amount for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries ₹200 to ₹300 per LPG cylinder. Union Minister Anurag Thakur confirmed the decision on Wednesday. This decision comes as a welcome relief to the 14.2-kg cylinder consumers who were previously paying ₹703, compared to the market price of ₹903. After this revision, PMUY beneficiaries will now pay ₹603 per cylinder.

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, launched in May 2016 by Narendra Modi, aims to provide clean cooking fuel in the form of LPG to rural and disadvantaged households that were previously dependent on traditional cooking fuels like firewood, coal, and cow-dung cakes.

The harmful effects of these traditional fuels on both the health of rural women and the environment prompted the introduction of this flagship scheme by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOPNG).

With the recent decision by the Union Cabinet, which approved the expansion of the PMUY, an additional 75 lakh poor households are set to benefit from the scheme, furthering its mission at an estimated cost of ₹1,650 crore over three years. This move underscores the government's commitment to improving the lives of disadvantaged communities by promoting cleaner and more sustainable cooking practices.
