Pistol and ammunition recovered in Murshidabad, arrests made in multiple districts

Firearms have once again been recovered in poll-bound West Bengal, with police seizing a country-made pistol and ammunition during a raid in Murshidabad district. The operation, conducted in Sadanandapur under the Hariharpara area on Thursday night, led to the arrest of one individual. The accused, identified as Jillar Sheikh, was detained after police received specific intelligence inputs and carried out a targeted search operation.

According to police, the suspect was intercepted during the raid and searched on the spot, leading to the recovery of a country-made firearm and two rounds of ammunition. Following the seizure, he was formally arrested and later produced before a district court in Berhampore. Police have sought custody to further investigate possible links and determine whether a larger network is involved in the illegal arms circulation.

The recovery comes amid heightened security measures ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, with increased surveillance, checkpoints, and routine inspections being carried out across the state. Law enforcement agencies have intensified efforts to curb the movement of illegal weapons, resulting in multiple such recoveries in recent days. Officials believe these operations are crucial in ensuring a secure electoral environment.

Similar incidents have also been reported from other districts, underlining a broader pattern of arms seizures. In Bhatpara, police recovered two firearms and three rounds of cartridges during an early morning raid, leading to the arrest of two individuals. In a separate operation in Nadia’s Taherpur area, another firearm along with cartridges and sharp weapons was seized, and one young man was arrested. These back-to-back recoveries have raised concerns over the circulation of illegal arms during the election period.
