PM Modi joins G7 Summit in Canada, focus on security, economy and key bilateral talks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kananaskis, Canada on Tuesday to attend the outreach session of the G7 Summit, with a packed agenda focusing on economic stability, global security and bilateral meetings with key world leaders. This marks the 12th time an Indian PM has been invited to the outreach session and Modi's sixth appearance since 2019.

A major highlight of the visit is Modi’s first face-to-face meeting with newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, seen as an attempt to reset strained bilateral relations. The two leaders are expected to discuss India’s concerns over pro-Khalistan activities in Canada and broader issues of trans-national crime. The meeting follows years of diplomatic tension since 2023, now thawing through renewed security-level dialogues.

Modi will also hold talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Ukraine is likely to seek continued humanitarian support from India and push for mediation as the Russia conflict drags on. India, maintaining neutrality, continues to advocate a return to diplomacy over battlefield solutions.

The G7 outreach session will center around global peace, digital transition, energy security, artificial intelligence, and infrastructure investment. Modi is also expected to voice concerns of the Global South, reinforcing India’s growing role in international decision-making frameworks.
