Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Alipurduar in North Bengal on May 29, BJP MP Manoj Tigga said on Tuesday. The potential visit comes just ahead of the assembly elections, making it a politically significant development in a region where the BJP is looking to consolidate support.
Speaking after inspecting the parade ground in Alipurduar, Tigga mentioned that preparations are already underway. “The Prime Minister has expressed his desire to come to Alipurduar on May 29. The ground was inspected to determine a suitable spot for the stage,” he said. Although the final confirmation is pending, local BJP leaders are preparing for the event.
If the visit happens, it will be Modi’s first visit to Alipurduar in a decade. He last visited nearby Madarihat during the 2011 and 2016 assembly election campaigns. BJP workers believe his visit will energize the cadre and boost the party’s prospects across the district. “We haven’t informed the booth-level workers yet. But the news has already created excitement,” said Tigga.
Despite a relatively weak performance in North Bengal during the last Lok Sabha elections, the BJP remains confident of winning big in the upcoming assembly polls. The party has begun grassroots mobilization, and Tigga sounded confident, saying, “On the 26th, it will be five for five in Alipurduar.”
The visit, if confirmed, will also be seen as a counter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has already made multiple visits to North Bengal ahead of the elections.
