Vijayakanth, who had been unwell for the past few years, was admitted to the hospital in November. His wife, Premalatha Vijayakanth, took over the leadership of the DMDK on December 14. Chief Minister MK Stalin paid his respects at Vijayakanth's residence, announcing that the late leader would be laid to rest with State Honours.
Vijayakanth, known for his significant contributions to Tamil cinema with 154 movies, ventured into politics in 2005, founding the DMDK. The party played a crucial role in Tamil Nadu's political landscape, emerging as the principal opposition party in 2011.
