Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced India’s 77th Republic Day celebrations by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi on Monday morning, paying homage to the nation’s fallen soldiers. The solemn ceremony began at approximately 10:30 am on January 26, with Mr Modi observing a moment of silence and honouring the supreme sacrifice of the bravehearts.
The Prime Minister was received at the memorial by senior defence officials, including the Minister of Defence and chiefs of the Army, Air Force and Navy, as military traditions were observed. An Inter-Services Guard presented honours, and buglers sounded the ‘Last Post’ as two minutes of silence were held in memory of those who laid down their lives for the nation.
Following the tribute, Mr Modi and dignitaries proceeded to Kartavya Path (formerly Rajpath) where the Republic Day parade unfolded. The event this year celebrates 150 years of the national song “Vande Mataram” and showcases India’s military strength, cultural diversity and developmental achievements with 30 tableaux and a host of advanced defence systems on display.
