Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate metro railway projects worth ₹5,200 crore in Kolkata this Friday. Ahead of his visit, PM Modi tweeted: “I am eager to be among @BJP4Bengal Karyakartas at a rally in Kolkata. With each passing day, public anger against the TMC is increasing. West Bengal is eagerly looking towards the BJP with hope because of our development agenda.” The inauguration marks the launch of a 13.61-kilometer metro network across the city.
The metro services will begin on three major stretches: Noapara–Jay Hind Airport, Sealdah–Esplanade, and Beliaghata–Hemanta Mukhopadhyay. PM Modi will flag off the Noapara–Jay Hind Airport metro service from Jessore Road, inaugurate Sealdah–Esplanade and Beliaghata–Hemanta Mukhopadhyay metro lines, and open a new subway at Howrah metro station.
The Noapara–Jay Hind Airport metro service is expected to improve airport accessibility significantly. The Sealdah–Esplanade line will cut travel time between the two points from approximately 40 minutes to just 11 minutes. The Beliaghata–Hemanta Mukhopadhyay line will strengthen connectivity with the city’s IT hub and integrate key commercial and residential areas.
These metro corridors will link some of Kolkata’s busiest areas, enhance multimodal transport connectivity, and benefit millions of daily commuters. The project is designed to improve travel efficiency, reduce traffic congestion, and support urban mobility across the city.
Following the inauguration, PM Modi will address the public at Jessore metro station. Security arrangements have been tightened across the city for the Prime Minister’s visit. The new metro services will also facilitate travel for tourists and devotees visiting Kolkata during the upcoming Durga Puja festival.
