Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his second visit to West Bengal within a span of five days, inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of various projects worth ₹15,400 crore in Kolkata on Wednesday, March 6. This visit is part of his extensive 10-day tour across 12 states and union territories. Among the projects unveiled, the highlight was the inauguration of India's first underwater Metro route, the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of Kolkata Metro's East-West corridor, stretching 4.8 kilometers. This corridor, constructed at a cost of ₹4,965 crore, includes the deepest Metro station in India at Howrah, situated 30 meters below ground level, and aims to facilitate connectivity to key areas such as the IT hub Salt Lake Sector V.
In addition to inaugurating the Metro route, PM Modi also flagged off other train services aimed at enhancing urban mobility, including the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and the Taratala-Majerhat Metro sections. Furthermore, he dedicated several other projects to the nation, including the Pune Metro stretch from Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi, Kochi Metro Rail Phase I Extension project, Agra Metro's Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar stretch, and the Duhai-Modinagar (North) section of Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor. Later in the day, PM Modi is slated to address a public rally at Barasat in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district.
