Police arrest 2 youths with gold biscuits, old currency notes worth 6 crores from Lake Town

Police authorities in Kolkata arrested two youths from outside the state after intercepting them in Lake Town’s B Block on Friday morning. The arrests were executed by a patrolling team from Lake Town Police Station after officers observed the duo moving about the area suspiciously while wearing matching raincoats and helmets. Following preliminary interrogation on the spot, officers seized four gold biscuits weighing a total of one kilogram, along with old ₹1 and ₹2 currency notes.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Bhagirath Jana, a resident of Odisha, and Ajit Mahita, hailing from Maharashtra. The total market value of the seized gold biscuits is estimated to be around ₹6 crore. Bidhannagar Commissionerate Police Commissioner Rathod Amitkumar Bharat addressed the media during a press conference on Friday morning, providing details about the seizure and ongoing operational procedures.

According to initial assessments by police officials, the arrested individuals are suspected to have links with illegal hawala trading networks operating across state borders. Police authorities have commenced formal proceedings to register a case under relevant statutory provisions to investigate the supply chain and financial connections behind the contraband.
