Bidhannagar Mayor Krishna Chakraborty resigns, another massive blow to TMC
Samaresh Chakraborty, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) councilor from Baguiati, was arrested by local police on Friday, May 15, 2026, following a string of criminal allegations involving assault and extortion. The arrest marks a significant turn in a legal battle that began two years ago when Chakraborty was first accused of physically assaulting a promoter.
While he had managed to evade arrest at the time and later secured anticipatory bail, fresh complaints from local residents suggest that his alleged reign of intimidation continued unabated. The situation escalated recently after a new First Information Report (FIR) was filed against the councilor, leveling serious charges of extortion.
Locals had long complained about his high-handedness and violent behavior, claiming that his previous legal reprieve had done little to curb his activities. Acting on these fresh leads and the mounting pressure from the community, the Baguiati police station moved in to take "action," successfully taking the leader into custody this evening.
