No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A major drug trafficking ring was busted in the heart of Kolkata following a successful raid by the police at Mirza Ghalib Street in the New Market area. Acting on specific intelligence, officers intercepted a group of individuals suspected of carrying a large consignment of narcotics. During the search, the police recovered approximately 8.25 kilograms of high-grade brown sugar, marking one of the most significant drug seizures in the city in recent months.
The investigation revealed that all six arrested individuals are residents of Kaliachak in Malda district, a region notorious for its links to the illegal drug trade. The smugglers had reportedly brought the "poisonous" contraband to Kolkata to distribute it across various local networks. Officials stated that the quality of the seized brown sugar is exceptionally high, with an estimated street value of around ₹8 crore in the international market.
Following the arrests on Thursday, the accused were produced before the Malda District Court. The police sought their custody to further investigate the supply chain and identify other potential associates involved in this cross-district racket. The court has granted one-day police custody for initial interrogation. Authorities are particularly concerned about the growing "poisonous smoke" of the Kaliachak drug trade expanding its footprint into the capital city.
