Police arrests BJP activists for distributing leaflets near CM Mamata's dharna stage

Police arrested two BJP workers on Monday for allegedly distributing ‘Parivartan Yatra’ leaflets near Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s dharna stage at Dharmatala, where the Trinamool Congress protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process entered its fourth day.

The incident created tension near the protest site in central Kolkata after BJP supporters reportedly began distributing pamphlets promoting the ‘Parivartan Yatra’. Trinamool Congress workers present at the dharna objected, claiming the act was an attempt to disrupt the ongoing protest.

After being informed about the incident, Mamata Banerjee issued strict instructions to police officials directly from the protest stage, directing them to take immediate action against those trying to disturb the movement.

Following the Chief Minister’s direction, police detained two BJP workers who were distributing the leaflets near the protest venue. According to police officials, steps have also been initiated to register a case in connection with the incident to maintain law and order in the area.

Speaking from the stage, Mamata Banerjee strongly criticised the BJP and accused the party of attempting to weaken the democratic movement through deliberate provocations. She alleged that BJP workers were intentionally approaching the protest venue to create disturbances and drag the agitation into controversy.

The dharna at Dharmatala has emerged as a major political focal point in the state, with large numbers of Trinamool supporters gathering at the site. The protest stage has also drawn attention for resembling the setting of Mamata Banerjee’s 2006 hunger strike at the same location against the then Left Front government.
