A woman was allegedly sexually harassed in Kolkata during a protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. According to those present at the protest, the man allegedly flashed his private parts at a protesting woman. The incident occurred near the Esplanade Crossing, one of the busiest intersections in the city. Some of the protesters caught the man red-handed and called the police personnel posted nearby.
The police present around identified the man as Tapas Pal, a local. This incident sparked outrage amongst the protesters, who began to agitate against the police, demanding immediate action against the person following which he was arrested. Based on the woman's complaint, a case has been registered under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The protest was organized by a group named “Amra Tilottoma” against the horrific rape-murder case at the RG Kar hospital. The incident triggered a wave of anger and frustration among the protesters, who gathered outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) to demand justice and accountability from the police force.
The woman, along with other protesters, has called for swift and strong action to ensure the safety and dignity of all citizens participating in peaceful protests.
