Actor Vijay Deverakonda has landed in controversy following his remarks at the pre-release event of the film Retro, which led to a police complaint for allegedly making derogatory comments against tribal communities. The complaint was filed by Hyderabad-based lawyer Lal Chauhan at the SR Nagar police station.
During his speech, Deverakonda condemned the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, and made a controversial analogy likening the terrorists’ actions to clashes between tribal groups from 500 years ago. His comment, “Asalu 500 years back tribals kokkutunnatu, veelu buddhi lekunda…,” loosely translates to accusing the attackers of behaving without common sense, like ancient tribal conflicts.
Tribal associations swiftly condemned the actor’s language, stating that such references demeaned their communities. Several groups have demanded a public apology and expressed disappointment over the casual and insensitive portrayal of tribal histories and cultures.
The police confirmed receipt of the complaint and stated that appropriate legal action will be considered after obtaining a legal opinion. The incident has sparked a fresh debate on the use of culturally sensitive language by public figures, especially during emotionally charged events.
Vijay’s original intent, according to his full speech, was to emphasize the need for education and de-radicalization to combat terrorism. However, his comparison has drawn widespread backlash, overshadowing the intended message.
