Following the rape and murder of a minor girl in New Town, Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate has announced strict identification measures for Toto and e-rickshaw drivers. All drivers must now obtain a police-issued photo identity card with a colored photograph. Three copies of the ID will be maintained—one attached to the vehicle, one with the police, and one with the transport department. This step aims to create an official record of all operators in the area.
Police sources confirmed that a background verification process would be conducted for each driver before issuing the identity card. Any driver with a past criminal record will not be granted an ID and will be barred from operating a Toto or e-rickshaw. Officials stated that many drivers come from outside the locality and operate rented vehicles without proper documentation, making it difficult for law enforcement to track them if they commit any offenses.
Authorities highlighted that this lack of documentation poses a serious security risk, as unverified drivers could flee after committing crimes. The new rule ensures every operator is registered, reducing the chances of unidentified offenders escaping law enforcement. Police officials also stated that the verification process is already underway and strict enforcement will follow to prevent unauthorized drivers from operating in New Town.
Residents have expressed concerns over passenger safety, especially for women and children. Many have welcomed the initiative, urging authorities to ensure its effective implementation. Bidhannagar Police has advised passengers to use only registered Totos and e-rickshaws and has hinted at additional transport regulations to enhance public safety in the coming weeks.
