Police from the Bijpur Police Station on Thursday took arrested Trinamool leader Abhijit Roy, alias Bony, to the locality for reconstruction of the alleged crime scene with a rope tied around his waist. The incident drew widespread public attention and triggered tension in the area upon his arrival. According to local sources, residents gathered in large numbers during the police exercise, leading to a volatile atmosphere. Observing the growing unrest, police personnel quickly escorted Bony back to the police station.
During interactions with journalists, Bony alleged that party leaders had abandoned him following his arrest. He further claimed that he was compelled to hand over a share of the alleged illicit money to Kamal Adhikari, the former Chairman of the Kanchrapara Municipality, who is currently absconding. Police have continued their investigation into the allegations and are examining all related aspects connected to the case.
Local residents alleged that Bony had long been involved in extortion activities across the locality. According to the allegations, money was allegedly collected in exchange for access to vacant railway quarters and for providing illegal electricity connections in the area. Traders in the locality also alleged that extortion demands were routinely made from local businesses and that those refusing to comply were allegedly assaulted.
