Kolkata Police on Friday morning took four arrested individuals to South Calcutta Law College to reconstruct the crime scene related to the alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old student. The incident, which took place on the evening of June 25, reportedly occurred at multiple spots inside the college campus. The reconstruction process began around 4:30am and continued for nearly four hours.
The accused include Monojit Mishra, a former student and employee of the college, Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed, both current students, and Pinaki Banerjee, the security guard on duty at the time. Police said that the purpose of the reconstruction was to verify the survivor’s complaint and check for consistency with other evidence.
According to the survivor’s statement, the assault lasted for more than three hours and took place in different areas within the college premises, including the guard’s room. The police confirmed that medical reports and circumstantial evidence have corroborated her claims. The survivor is a first-year student at the institution.
A police officer involved in the investigation stated, “The reconstruction of the crime scene is a vital part of the investigation. Our findings will now be cross-checked with the allegation of the woman and verified with other evidence.”
Pinaki Banerjee, the security guard, is scheduled to be produced before the court later on Friday. His police custody is set to end, and he has been accused of failing to discharge his duties during the time of the alleged crime. The investigation is currently being conducted by the Detective Department of Kolkata Police.
