Ahead of Diwali celebrations, the East Medinipur District Police have launched a large-scale crackdown on the manufacturing and sale of illegal firecrackers. In the past week, raids across multiple police station areas have led to the seizure of over 1,000 kilograms of banned firecrackers and raw materials. So far, nine people have been arrested in connection with the illegal trade.
According to officials, the raids were conducted in Panskura, Kanthi, Haldia, Mahishadal, and Tamluk police station areas. The Egra Police Station alone recovered firecrackers worth around ₹7 lakh. The district police confirmed that they incur heavy costs in safely destroying the seized explosives, but the campaign has been intensified this year to ensure public safety.
District Superintendent of Police stated that this drive is part of an annual operation conducted ahead of Diwali to curb illegal firecracker activities. However, after last year’s devastating explosion in Egra, the police have adopted a zero-tolerance approach, deploying special teams to monitor manufacturing hubs and ensure compliance with safety norms.
