The Special Task Force (STF) of the Kolkata Police carried out a successful operation at Babughat on Tuesday, resulting in the detention of two individuals suspected of illegal arms smuggling. Acting on a tip-off, the officers intercepted the duo in the busy transit area. Upon searching their belongings, the police recovered a significant cache of weapons, including two firearms and approximately 20 to 22 live cartridges. The items were immediately seized as part of the formal investigation.
In addition to the weaponry, the STF found several other items in the suspects' possession. These included a motorcycle key, a mobile phone, and a small amount of cash totaling ₹685. The discovery of the bike key has led investigators to believe that a vehicle might have been stationed nearby to facilitate a quick escape or transport the consignment to another location within the city. All recovered items have been documented and taken into police custody for forensic analysis.
The STF suspects that the arms were being smuggled into Kolkata to be delivered to local criminal gangs or for a specific planned operation. The timing of the seizure is significant as security is usually tightened across the city during the year-end period.
