High Court declines relief to Abhishek Banerjee in DJ comment case
The West Bengal police have issued official summons to Rejinagar MLA Humayun Kabir, directing him to appear at the police station on July 3 and July 5, 2026, in connection with two separate criminal cases. The law enforcement action follows controversial remarks made by the MLA during public meetings in Kashipur and Shaktipur, where he threatened political opponents and warned that he would surround a local police station with thousands of people to release his arrested nephew. Following the speech, the police arrested three event organizers before serving the appearance notices at the lawmaker's residence on Tuesday morning.
The administrative action intensified immediately after a stern public warning from Chief Minister Shuvendu Adhikari in the state assembly. Adhikari emphasized that multiple cases under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) have been formally registered against the MLA for his communal and provocative assertions, stating that the law would take its course without political bias. The Chief Minister also announced his plans to personally visit the Murshidabad district within a week to review the police action and ensure accountability.
Responding to the development, MLA Humayun Kabir stated that he was currently away from his residence and had not personally received or reviewed the official physical notice yet. He mentioned that he would confirm the exact details with his family members who were present at the house before deciding on his legal compliance regarding the scheduled appearances. Kabir added that while he would review the notices thoroughly upon his return, he would not succumb to any outside political subjugation.
